Is full-service interior design right for a single room, or only whole homes?

Clients often ask:

"Do I need to be renovating my entire house to hire an interior designer?"

The short answer is: Not at all.

While I certainly work on whole-home projects, many of my favorite transformations have started with a single room. In fact, designing one room well can often have a bigger impact on how you live than trying to make small changes everywhere at once.

A single room can change the way you live

Think about the rooms you use every day.

Your living room is where your family gathers after dinner; Your bedroom is where you begin and end each day; A kitchen is where conversations happen while dinner simmers on the stove; the mud room is where the children drop all their belongings.

When one of those rooms isn't functioning well or simply doesn't feel like you, you notice it every day.

Rather than spreading your budget across an entire house, it can make sense to invest in getting one important room exactly right so daily life can run smoothly and beautifully.

What full-service interior design includes

Whether we're designing one roxom or an entire home, we follow the same process on each project to create a streamlined experience for our clients.

Full-service interior design means we handle everything from the overall concept to the final styling. Depending on the project, that may include:

  • Layout planning and furniture layout

  • Color palettes and materials

  • Furniture selection

  • Window treatments

  • Lighting

  • Rugs, artwork, and accessories

  • Custom cabinetry or millwork details

  • Ordering, tracking, and coordinating deliveries

  • Installation and styling

The only real difference between a single-room project and a whole-home project is the scope.

Why starting with one room often makes sense

Many clients assume they need to wait until they're ready to redesign their entire house, but I think there's wisdom in starting smaller.

Designing one room gives us the opportunity to establish the home's direction—its color palette, materials, furniture style, and overall personality. That room often becomes the foundation for future phases, making the rest of the home flow and feel cohesive as it's completed over time.

It's a bit like writing the first chapter of a book. Once the tone is established, everything else follows naturally.

When a single-room project is the right fit

A one-room interior design project is ideal if:

  • You've recently moved into a home

  • You are starting over with furniture

  • Daily life feels chaotic and the home isn’t functioning well

  • You're furnishing a newly built room or addition

  • You're updating a primary bedroom, living room, or dining room

  • You're refreshing a vacation home

  • You simply want one room that finally feels finished

Many of my clients eventually continue into additional rooms, but there's absolutely no requirement to do so.

When whole-home design makes more sense

There are times when designing the entire home together is the better investment.

If you're renovating multiple rooms at once, building a new home, or replacing most of your furnishings, planning everything together allows us to create a cohesive vision from the beginning. It also helps avoid expensive decisions that may need to be revisited later.

Not ready?

If you're still deciding whether to move forward, a design consultation can be a wonderful first step.

During a consultation, we'll walk through your home, discuss your goals, identify what's working (and what isn't), and create a clear path forward. Some clients leave with enough direction to tackle the project themselves, while others decide they'd like us to manage the entire process.

Either approach can work well.

The bottom line

Full-service interior design isn't reserved for large estates or whole-home renovations. Sometimes the most meaningful transformation begins with one thoughtfully designed room, and there’s no project too small.

If you're tired of second-guessing every furniture purchase or feeling like your home never quite comes together, starting with one room can be the smartest investment you make. Beautiful homes are created thoughtfully, one good decision at a time.
